A short walk towards the Ambalangoda town from our hotel will take you to the Ariyapala Mask Museum. Once there, guests can sign up for a 30 minutes tour of the museum takes them through an array of masks created by talented artists. The price for each artwork varies with size and complexity. The locals of Sri-Lanka perform numerous fables with the use of these masks that are constructed using wood. The museum houses devil dancer masks along with masks depicting the facial construction of an ancient devil.
Lining along the territory of the small town named Balapitiya, Madu River is surrounded by swampy marshlands covered in mangrove forests. The flow of the river via the terrain has created many islandsalong the way with an ecosystem that consists of 31 types of reptiles and over 100 bird species. One canenjoy boat safari via the canals at affordable prices to view the fauna that thrive within this ecosystem. Those who wish to self-indulge can make a quick stop at the fish spa.
Also known as Galagoda Shailatharama Viharaya, this temple is a hidden treasure comprising of stunning viewsalong with aesthetic value. Hop on a glass-bottom boat and ride out to the sunset to view the colorful corals that add to the charm of Hikkaduwa. Whether you hang out at the beach bars or laze away on the sun beds, Hikkaduwa beaches are a tremendous place to get out of the busy schedule and indulge in some soul-searching.
The Kosgoda Turtle Hatcheries can be reached by via a car in less than 30 minutes from the Ambalangoda town area. The best time to visit this place is from December to April during the early evening. This is when the hatcheries release the babies to the uncharted waters of the vast sea for a safe life ahead away from the poachers and hunters who kill them for food.
The Meetyagoda Moonstone Mine is located near a small southwest village in Sri Lanka where you can find these beautiful stones which are white and give a blue shimmer. A visit to the nearby spice garden that is loaded with fresh cinnamon will give you the opportunity to take learn more about the world famous Sri Lankan Cinnamon and how it’s made.
The Seenigama Temple is a divine place of worship for the people of Sri Lanka. Located in the Hikkaduwa area, a quick boat ride can take you to this temple which is built on a rock island in the sea. This shrine is dedicated to God Devol who is known to protect the local fishermen and be responsible for their economic well-being.
